Anyone notice that the problem seems to be specific to BMW, but so much of the complaining is directed at Apple? Have people been reading the posts? I thought not.
Well, to be fair, if folks with iPhone 12s and 13s and 14s didn't have this issue then it does seem to be related to the 15 some how. The cars didn't change.

What is the point of wireless charging? To save a couple of seconds that it would otherwise take to plug in a wire? Taking that couple of seconds to plug in a wire will save several minutes or even hours because wired charging charges the phone much faster than wireless charging.
Some people prioritize convienience over speed.

Not needing to bring a cable to your car to keep your phone battery topped up during a commute or a road trip is convenient.

Genius.

So glad I found this. Have the 15 pro and a new 2024 i4. Got the “Apple Pay issue detected” alert yesterday and after hours of troubleshooting and a call with Apple Support, they determined the Apple Pay hardware was fried. Exchanged the phone for a new one today. Less than 2 minutes on the wireless charger of the i4, and it happened again this afternoon. Looking back, I got the error yesterday after having it on the i4 wireless charger for the first time. Now I’ve got another new fried iPhone and a new i4 that I will never trust with wireless charging.

What a waste of iphone and resources… keep the third one away from the i4’s wireless charging until a fix is sorted 😬

What a mess the iphone 15 series is turning into

How in gods green earth can these things be related?
Both times it happened to two different phones this weekend,
Wireless charging usually does a handshake between the device and the charger before charging begins, and I guess that may involve NFC?
maybe this? My 2024 i4 did this to new 15 pro’s this weekend, both within minutes of putting it on the wireless charger. Not long enough for it to overheat.

If you have an iPhone 15 and drive a BMW, it might be best to avoid charging the device with the vehicle's wireless charging pad for now.

Over the past week, some BMW owners have complained that their iPhone 15's NFC chip no longer works after charging the device with their vehicle's wireless charging pad, according to comments shared on the MacRumors Forums and X, formerly known as Twitter. Affected customers say the iPhone goes into a data recovery mode with a white screen, and the NFC chip is no longer functional after the device reboots.

In an iPhone, the NFC chip powers features like Apple Pay and digital car keys. Affected users receive a "Could Not Set Up Apple Pay" error message in the Wallet app, and there does not appear to be a way to fix the problem. Some customers say Apple replaced their iPhone after confirming the NFC chip failed, but the replacement iPhone is then vulnerable to the same issue, so there is currently no permanent solution.

While complaints so far have come from iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is possible the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also affected, so owners of any iPhone 15 model should proceed with caution until this issue is sorted.

It's unclear what the specific cause of the issue is, how many customers are affected, and which BMW models are affected. We've reached out to an Apple spokesperson for comment, and we'll update this story if we receive a response.

Yeah I don’t get it either.. the last thing I’d want to do is wirelessly charge a phone in a car especially when it’s sunny.. wireless always adds heat. Especially when the wireless is a flat surface instead of a mounted charger which allows the phone to be used while charging
Guess it depends on the car and the phone. I wouldn't want to charge an iPhone 15 full stop, sounds like Apple have built a hand grenade rather than a phone. I also take issue with car manufacturers that have built in a Qi charger but still don't support wireless Apple Car Play...

I have the SE3 which charges wirelessly with zero heat. Works brilliantly with my Discovery Sport. Can recommend the phone and the car!

I have a 2021 BMW 540i and have used my iPhone 15Pro in it with no problem charging or with car play, but I will not use it again until more info about this becomes available. I also have a 2022 BMW M850i that was built when BMW did not have chips for the wireless charging, and it was removed from the build. Frankly, I like using an adjustable phone holder in a cupholder, but this is not possible in my wife's 540 as she does not want anything in her cupholder.

Yeah, threads like this are useful to calibrate which members are interested in rational thought and which are just looking for excuses to pile on.

I don't own this vehicle but wow. Just wow.

This iPhone (and Watch) launch has in fact been a disaster.

But MacRumors is probably happy since all this has been bringing them plenty of traffic.

The overheating issue I could care less about (I don't respect anyone who uses Instagram, I always uninstall Uber after I use it, I don't play freebie games with in app purchases, etc) but this seems like a pretty serious glitch. Been using iPhone 15 Pro since launch and havn't had any issues!
Completely agree. Zero issues and I use exclusively the Apple wireless charger. Don’t have InstaNarcasict, FaceF@#k or ****Tock installed either, no antisocial media for that matter. I can all but guarantee that the MetaTurd apps are causing the over heating issue.

Same here with my 14Pro. Really disappointed.

That happened to me, too. And the "Charging on hold" while charging in my car also happened. I don't know why, but my phone would get abnormally hot on the car's charger (not a BMW). So I'm not surprised that this is happening. But I also don't have a read on whether this is more hardware or software related.

I use wireless charging overnight but yeah, it can seem extremely limited. considering you have to pick up your device to use it but it needs to lay against a surface to charge.

MagSafe type chargers/cables help with that issue though.

Had so many problems with my 2023 Honda CR-V wireless charging I end up 3D printing a plate that goes over the charger and installing a MagSafe charger in the plate. Works great and always charges.

This is very very bad...
Honestly my long time loyalty for Apple is being tested (I'll probably never switch...but still).

I never expected apple launches to ve perfect, but this is getting ridiculous...
It doesn't really seem to matter what we're talking about...iPhones, Macs, iOS, macOS...
Something's horribly broken each time (especially with iPhones) and I'm longing more and more for the days of "it just works" apple...
Consider I'm in my early 30s, so these days were not that long ago...
I remember things going downhill from 2011 with macOS Lion...

I could already imagine that the BMW generates high spurious frequencies that induce voltage with high power into the NFC antenna. Then it would be a BMW error after all. This should be verifiable with the appropriate measurement technology.

Why don't you respect people who communicate on the internet? What relevance does that opinion have here?

On a BMW, I'm pretty sure you have to subscribe to iCharging Pro along with your heated seats subscription in order to get wireless charging with only premium grade electrons.
