Sounds more idiotic to make assumptions about something you've never even tried. Most people tend to look at their phone when they use it.

i have tried it. it's called windows 10 hello. i used it on my laptop then disabled it

I think abandoning TouchId was done, because Apple failed to integrate an under the screen finger print sensor. So they went with plan B, imo.

that's what i think too. doesn't mean they should give up on it altogether, if it takes another 1-2 years to integrate it, fine. keep touchid until then, and integrate touchid to the display after.

No, you haven't used Face ID, so stop comparing it to different tech. Judge it when you've used it. Maybe you're someone who looks for negatives instead of positives and actually giving things a go.

If Touch ID couldn't go under the screen, Apple clearly didn't want it anywhere else. So the solution? Something new. Fair play to them.

How about they try to develop both at the same priorities and then a the middle of the development process they found out that TouchID under display doesn’t work or can’t be manufactured to match the damands of iPhone sales, so the choose to go with FaceID instead.

If Touch ID was under the screen you would have to look at the screen to use it.
That's actually a really good point.

You'd have to look down at the screen anyway to see where to put your thumbprint.

Apple realized how redundant it would be and just adopted FaceID when they got it working and abandoned TouchID.

Because they have developed something better? At least that’s what Apple thinks. You know, the people that made Touch ID what it is. Let’s give it a shot before saying Touch ID is X times better. You’ve never used it. And I don’t need more of the “I can unlock my phone without even looking at it” people coming out.

I've only been using Touch ID for a week and I find it annoying that half the time I invoke Siri.

That’s exactly right.Dev only get information about how you move your face, not raw information from TrueDepth camera.

Incorrect. All third party apps have access to the raw mesh data of your face, the exact 3D model of your face including expressions.

Never happened to me. Simply raise to wake, rest my finger on the sensor, and I’m in. There’s an option in settings so you don’t have to press the home button.

People like you go along with anything Apple thinks. What about ensuring you give the people who buy your devices what they actually want?

Apple has shown again and again that people don't know what they want until they use their products.

TouchID, on screen keyboards, multi touch screens, Lightning connectors, and killing off floppy drives are just a few off the top of my head.

Haha some may say you’re exactly the same when it comes to Android. Not even sure why you spend so much time on an Apple forum. And to your question, I’m pretty sure they did. Same internals on two phones, one retaining the home button and Touch ID, and a new edge to edge design with OLED. They are giving their customers what they want.

And yeah Apple has shown time and time again it doesn't mind removing key features like a headphone jack or even adding key features like real USB-C and including a actual fast charger in the box with the expensive device you paid for.

Key features?

The headphone jack is dead. Apple wasn't the only one to drop it.

Lightning works just fine, no need to switch to a completely different standard right now.

Yeah I'd like it if fast charging was included but it is what it is.

Your just fine mentality is bogus. You could have said the same for Touch ID. It works just fine as well. LOL.....:D

Headphone jack is not dead when I have several high end pairs of headphones at home that needs that jack. Plenty other people do as well......

Conversely, the headphone jack is dead when I don't use 3.5mm jacks anymore. Plenty of other people do as well...

Mental gymnastics work both ways.

you know, this is a clear case of "voting with your wallet" type of decision.

If you'd rather have TouchID on your device then stop buying iPhone X. Tell Apple this is NOT the future of smartphone.

This is just like Apple forcing USB-C (and shallower keyboard and higher price) onto all Mac users. Hey, I think Mac sales haven't look too good lately.

i honestly don't think that's the case..

further, i believe the way it's set up is that each device generates it's own unique/random means of putting the pieces back together.. meaning, if someone were successful in extracting the faceID data from an iPhone X, they couldn't reconstruct a face with the data unless they also had the exact A11 chip which enrolled the face to begin with.

this is the same, or similar, as fingerprints and touchID.

ok.. but what happens if the iPhone X sells in record numbers?
then what?

you've voted with your wallet.. the vote lost.
are you going to change your mind about it then? or what?

My issue with face ID is that your image can be used in other ways. Those on FB already know that your friends, and family can be ID’d from photos. Hover over their image and their name pops up. Having a database with my face ID does not sit right with me. Especially in times of frequent data breaches. The information can be used by others in my absence. Even if the info is claimed to stay on my device, I don’t trust it.

At least with Touch ID they need your finger. As long as my fingers are attached I don’t have to worry.
iOS (let alone third-party apps) can’t access your actual face data, and the face data is stored in a way such that it is impossible or nearly so to recreate a person’s face from it. Since iOS can’t access the face data itself (instead, the TrueDepth hardware talks to the Secure Enclave which gives a pass/fail indicator to iOS), the face data can't leave the device.

As for the front-facing depth map shown off in the keynote with Snapchat and Animoji, the information exposed to developers can be reviewed in-depth here and here, but developers still don’t get access to your face data—only a depth map, which is not useful by itself in recreating someone’s face.

it's 100x more convenient to use, has basically no downsides compared to faceid in real world usage, it's faster and we've already been through 2 generations of making it more consistent and reliable.

faceid is worse to use during winter (when you're wearing lots of clothes covering ur face), it's harder to use in class, in the morning when you just woke up, during meetings when you need to quickly glance at ur phone for 1 second etc.

there's 0 advantages to faceid besides being "slightly more secure" which really isn't an issue at all with touchid for 99.9% of the population.

at least keep touchid on the next few standard iphones and keep the faceid crap for the x and future versions of the x
Face ID works when your face is wet. Unlike Touch ID.

How do we know the data cannot be subpoenaed, or hacked?
If someone subpoenaed your phone for face data, you can bet that they are already at a point where they no longer need your face data.

You have no idea what my profession is, nor I yours, but from what I have seen in my course of employment leads me to believe you have no idea what you are talking about…
Well, if you work in information security (and even I’m not in that field except as a passing interest), you would likely at least be aware that this white paper was released as promised, detailing the security of Face ID extensively.
