I respect your choice, but saying that every Safari user is using it by choice is just wrong. You'd be lucky if even 5% of the Safari users has actually tried any alternative and made an active choice.
Most people just use the browser that ships with the OS and don't bother looking for alternatives.
Do you think every IE user out there has made the choice to use IE? :)

By the way, where does the 5% number come from? I've seen a lot of web browser statistics but I've never seen Safari go that high on general sites.
Perhaps it's US only?

I never said implicitly all of them, but i think most mac users are more aware of their choices. After all, they did know there was a choice other than Windows right? I don't know a single mac user who isn't aware they have more than one browser choice. Heck i know stalwarts who continue to use IE for mac!

As far as the stats go:

http://www.macobserver.com/article/2007/05/01.9.shtml

I know at my university, our stats show safari at abour 10%, however, Mac OS share is 15%. Clearly, mac users know there are options.

I'll grant you, for that 5% that is unlikely they all made a purposeful choice, but I bet a coke and donut lunch the big majority of them did.

I hate to tell you this but Mac-like == hidden to most people until they stumble over it. Faster is relative. OMG its 10% faster...so it loads in 9 seconds instead of 10. And as for the crapware add ons. You simply haven't been using the right add ons then. And Firefox composes a heck of a lot more then 5%. Right now it's hovering in the 13%-ish range.

The 5% number is descriptive of the Safari share. "Faster is relative"? - in what universe? i have tried dozens of FF add ons, most of them are not worth the effort of downloading.

Look I am not trying to pick a fight. I am stating facts. There are lots of reasons why Safari users deliberately use Safari over other options.

Why is the Mac beta still brushed metal while the Windows beta is the new polished metal?

isn't the windows version using it's own (unique) appearance resources, whereas the Mac version is using the mac os X communal appearance resources?

That would be why. I think.

Safari 3 is the best browser for Mac now IMHO. It was really behind again in terms of speed, but Safari 3 has fixed that! Thanks Apple.

I realize we didn't even have Safari 2 for Panther, but I'm finding it a bit ironic that Safari 3 is now supported on Windows software that was released in 2001, but not Mac software released in LATE 2003.

Beta 3 Crippled my com

oh dang. in my rush to try out safari 3 beta i practically crippled my mac now!
the beta was installing but i accidentally force quit the installer somewhere near the start. apparently, the installer got rid of the old app and it didn’t have time to install the beta. so right now, i’ve lost safari as an app.
the installer refused to open again after i tried to open it (the installer icon just appeared and disappeared on my dock) so i tried opening some other installer files from apple i.e. iTunes 7 installer.
Again, i got the same results and in the process iTunes refuses to open up now (but I am able to see it under my apps).
To my further shock, Mail and some p2p network transfer apps like Transmission refused to open. Thank god firefox is up and i can use it now.
Question is, i really don’t want to loose my organisation in Safari and iTunes. I know i can still salvage the bookmarks and mp3s, but what can i do to get the apps back???? i use Tiger on the non-intel iMac btw.

The differences between Mac and Windows are becoming more and more blurred over time. I cannot really see this encouraging Windows users to switch if anything they will most likely be encouraged to not switch. You can even get a dock for Windows to make it look like Mac OSX which is completely legal. The main difference now is that Mac OSX is just more secure but Windows is getting more secure as well.
I really like using Safari and this is good for me if i want to buy a PC notebook in the future i could just stick Safari on it and maybe just live with it. I don't use iChat or some of the other extras.

Maybe i just don't like sharing ha. It looks like i am the only one to be a bit negative about all this. I do think though that Apple is spending maybe to much time on this instead of giving Apple customers some of the things they really want.

I understand why they are doing this. Websites generally cater to the browser who has the most users before getting to lesser used browsers. Safari has suffered from this. Google documents didn't work with safari for a long time and now it finally does. I think support will only increase with more market share and to get more market share you have to go after windows users.

After using Safari 3.0 I think it better handles RAM than Safari 2.0. With 2.0 as long as safari was open its RAM usage would increase the longer it stayed open. This problem seems to be fixed and it hovers around 110MB if its still running with no windows open. This seems to be a big improvement. Can anyone else confirm this?

i'm a mac user and i use FF, kinda makes me wonder how well will safari be received by the windows crowd.

i have tried dozens of FF add ons, most of them are not worth the effort of downloading.

while not all FF extensions are useful, there's a handful of them that makes me prefer FF over safari.

On XP Pro and Safari is taking up 130 mb of memory.

Fonts look either blotchy/unsharp - or they look very bold and heavy. Unpleasant to look at for more than a few seconds.

Anyone got any tips?

Try adding multiple backgrounds to the same element or using text shadows with all your wonderful browsers that don't suck.

Oh, I forgot, you can't

If nobody can use these (CSS 3 features) then why bother adding them to your web pages?

The current 'state of the art' is IE6. It is a complete bug-ridden piece of petulant junk that isn't fit for purpose, but that's the browser which is most common and will be for at least the next few years (because some people won't be able to "upgrade" to that other festering browser, IE7).

In terms of bugs it's a toss-up where Safari sits. If it wasn't for Microsoft's incompetence, Safari would be the most bug-ridden browser. I.e. it's a very strong second place - and unlike Firefox Apple don't fix their bugs.

But Camino does have ad-blocking. I was covering my bases. Safari should at least try for having one feature that the Gecko browsers have over it. Even OmniWeb beats it for sheer usability.

No, Camino has *popup* blocking. Ad blocking enables one to prevent a specific URL (using wild cards if necessary) from being downloaded.
