You read it correctly and I think it is wrong. Why would they release 5 new models this year? What's the point in updating the Xs and Xs Max and release two similar models with triple camera?
More likely they'll have Xs and Xs Max at lower price points, the Xr (maybe an updated version) and those two new flagship models.
I agree but the only issue is the OLED screen being too expensive to manufacture I do not see Apple keeping the XS and XS Max in this year's lineup. More likely we will see the iPhone 8 as being the entry iPhone with a decreased price then the iPhone XIR, iPhone XI, then of course the iPhone XI Max.

Most ppl i know have gotten out of the new phone craze. Now we just get new phones when our old ones die. But it seems like the fad of getting a new phone each year has passed. So i think ppl like Apple and others try to provide as many new ones every to tempt you.

People have skipping upgrades for a while now. Say for example, I upgrade every third year, so this year is my turn to upgrade my 7. I'm pretty sure there are others who also skips every few years and next year is their turn to upgrade. So there will always be interest every year, just from different people.

They are actually suggesting 2019 will see the following new iPhones:
- iPhone XR 2
- iPhone XS 2
- iPhone XS Max 2
- iPhone X1
- iPhone X1 Max
That's if I read the article correctly.
That is what it sounds like, though if I had to guess I would say rather they will continue offering the XS/Max discounted alongside the new phones rather than discontinuing them immediately like they did with the X.

Wonder if Apple will switch to aluminum rather than heavy glass back, given their failure with the chargining mat.

Yea you can use any third party wireless charger, but it takes forever; beats the purpose

smh. No.

Apple believes in a wireless future. Just because they failed to engineer a wireless charger that can charge anywhere on its surface, doesn’t mean Apple will drop wireless charging. lol that’s absurd.

And I don’t think AirPower would’ve charged your device any faster than any other wireless charger. It’s best used when you go to bed or are putting your phone down to charge as you switch to an iPad or Mac.

That's my point, the whole song and dance with going to all glass was for wireless charging. Now that they failed in that department, shouldn't they switch back to aluminum back? Much more durable and my gosh, so much lighter!
There are still plenty of good third party wireless chargers out there and I'm sure Apple will release a first party one at some point. Just because AirPower is dead doesn't mean wireless charging is dead, Apple clearly believes that future is wireless and portless.

Wow. This is terrible. Looks like I will be sticking with my iPhone 8 for the third year in a row.

That camera module looks terrible. I'd like to think Apple wouldn't do something so bad, but we already have big offset camera bumps and notches, so...
Besides Huawei has already done the "squircle" on the Mate 20 Pro in 2018. As terrible as that module is, at least they had the decency to center it. Here's hoping Apple goes with something else.

If you thought about it for any time at all, you'd realize that there are multiple reasons why having the camera module in the corner is better for functionality.

I normally have never cared what they looked like, but...if that's what phones are going to look like soon...yuck.

Apple seem to have the same Pre-Jobs problem. Can’t figure out who to market to, so make tons of products and hope they sell. There’s a significant cost to keep production going, inventory stocked, support services, etc for all these lines.

Having 7 or so active phones with multiple colors / configurations of each means you may get more customers, but the costs to get them are much, much higher so your pricing is up there too.

Yes. Blind leadership - there is no visionary at the helm. Apple is looking at trends, complying with them, then tosses out a few things to see what sticks.

This is becoming like the disposable razor battle in the 90's that ended up with the 6-bladed razors we have today.

The back of the phone is starting to look like the eye of an arachnid.

Same. 8+ here. I'm waiting for them to remove the notch, offer a true edge to edge display, USB-C, 8gb of ram (joking but would be nice), a better camera with a wider angle len(s) (24mm would be nice).

But they're still riding a wave that Jobs created. Even though there's no innovation, the company is still making money, including everyone at the top. So there's not much incentive to push people out. I think the company knows Tim Cook is bad for business but they don't know who to put in his place. They've gone to a business model where they do what everyone else is doing, and try to do it as good or better than the competition. The days of Apple being the trend setters are over.

Tim should be VP of the diversity and inclusion department, not the CEO.

You know what's great, that I can't use my Lighting headphones that came with my iPhone XS on a new Macbook Pro or the new iPad Pro which is now USB C. So the continuity even within their lines is blurred even more now. Also, I love that the iPhone XR, the cheaper, model has "The longest battery life ever in an iPhone." You'd think you'd want that in your flagship device? Nah. So also why not throw 3 or 4 more cameras on the back of the phone in their own little bump layer on top of the "sleek" design, super useful when clearly there is no where else they could improve.... Everyone had a heart attack with the first camera bump, so Apple was like "oh yea?" well here's one 3 times as big.

In a fresh twist on recent iPhone rumors, Japanese tech blog Mac Otakara today reported that Apple plans to launch two entirely new 2019 iPhone models with triple-lens cameras, which would debut alongside internally updated versions of the current iPhone XR/XS/XS Max lineup.

Citing reliable sources in the Chinese supply chain, the report claims that the two new iPhone models would come with 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays and the previously heavily rumored triple-lens camera system.

The report goes on to suggest the two new models will have a thicker body to compensate for the larger camera module, so the 6.1-inch model will be around 0.15mm thicker than the existing iPhone XS, while the camera bump will see a 0.5mm reduction in protrusion.

Likewise, the body of the 6.5-inch model will supposedly be 0.4mm thicker with a camera bump reduced by 0.25mm, which equates to an overall 0.2mm thickness increase over the current iPhone XS Max.

Macotakara claims the two new models will come with a USB-C to Lightning cable and an 18 Watt USB-C power adapter, with an ability for the rear of the phone to wirelessly charge Qi-compatible devices like Apple Watch and AirPods 2 "likely."

In general, the rumor mill narrative suggests triple lens camera systems are a given this year, but most other leaks - from OnLeaks in particular - have implied that the three-lens camera won't be exclusive to any one iPhone, and certainly don't suggest it will be a unique feature of additional models in Apple's lineup.

Given the leftfield claims, today's report should be taken with a grain of salt, although Macotakara has provided accurate information on unreleased iPhones in the past, so it's possible there's something to it.
