For all the people who constantly complain about this...Just deal with it and get a bumper or a case or take the phone back. For the people who are mad bc they didn't fix this problem, what did you expect from the almighty Mr. Jobs. He says there is no problem, learn how to hold the phone like I do. This will not be an issue because I'm going to install a case. Who doesn't?

Verizon users knew about the issue yet they still bought the phone. Now they got the phone and are complaining.

odd.. i'm trying to reproduce the situation with my Verizon iphone and not doing what your phone is doing..no signal drops

The moral (of this kind of threads) is that most people do not think before they write.

hahahaha, yeah ok, that's it. I wrote this to make people aware who are still questioning if it happens with the CDMA one also.

The moral is, you guys are such fanboys and cant admit when Apple has an issue with some of their products. Jobs went on stage and said it's not an issue so the fanboys stand by him. If he said your crap was really yellow and not brown, you would probably defend him and say the coloring system is all wrong and steve is right, my crap is yellow

I'm in my office, in a highrise building in Los Angeles. On my iPhone, the signal dropped from full bars to 1 or no bars on the AT&T iPhone, and on my new Verizon iPhone, it drops from a full 5 bars down to 4 bars.

No, actually, the moral of the story is, if you aren't happy with your phone, return it.

Seriously, either get a case, live with your problem, or return the phone. Those are your options.

You aren't happy? Get a different phone. Trying to start a flame war with supposed Apple "fanboys" isn't only a waste of time, it makes your motives questionable.

If you don't like it, get rid of the damn thing. I'm sure there's millions of other Verizon users that would be happy to take it off your hands.

LOL! Yeah, it does feel like that on here sometimes.

thanks for testing, trying to narrow down if it's possible my phone, may go to Apple next week once the sales calm down to see if they can switch it or at least test it, i know the Apple store by me has a strong signal

SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!! I came on here to warn people that were still questioning if the antenna was an issue, you guys jump down my throat because you all believe Jobs, it's amazing how on another forum thats not Apple/Mac related, they all agree, are doing tests and everyone is trying to help and narrow down solutions, you guys here are unreal

CAN THE MODS JUST DELETE THIS THREAD, THIS FORUM SHOULD BE CALLED MACFANBOYS.COM HAHAHAHAHAA.

You come on here to help and answer questions and you people all think you work for Apple and Jobs sends you checks to defend their stuff

I love the iphone, it's why I went back to it once it came to verizon, it still doesnt mean I cant come here to let people know the issue and that myslef and other people will not be happy IF they were on the fence based on this issue

This should not be a surprise to anyone who understands anything about EM waves. Touching part of the antenna is going to modify impedance and change signal performance. What Apple did do is remove the single point failure as seen on the AT&T phone (touching the black band). To expect anything different without a fundamental design change is naive. The simple fact remains that in many situations, the iphone 4's reception is superior due to the antenna design. It is because of this that interference from the user has a larger effect to produce the same results.

no, the real moral is that you were planning to buy a phone that you thought had issues and purchased it anyway. Had there been any news that the antenna had changed? Nope, just numerous reports that it would function the same on Verizon (albeit with slower data). Many of us have never had this problem and likely never will. I'm just confused if you're not one of the sheeple you're referring to, why did you buy the phone in the first place?

Wow that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Way to be scientific with it. One attempt to make a call, subsequently the call was dropped and now it's "Anntenagate" all over again?

Now I'm not claiming the phone is fixed but don't base this off of one attempt, there are numerous factors that could have gone it to play.

Like any other product apple releases, there were tons of rumors when the Verizon one was announced, right away people were posting different ways the antennas were placed and moved and that "MAYBE" it would solve the one touch area that degrades the signal a lot for some phones... I took my chances being that i love the iphone look, design, OS and Facetime so i can see my family while traveling, I like the ease of it syncing with all my itunes movies and music along with my iPad and several Macbooks that I own. As much as I love Apple products, I dont come on here to defend them like you all do.

When some macbooks/pro were released they had screen issues, keyboard issues, video chip issues etc... I went on and simply said I was one of the lucky ones to not have the issue, Just like you guys are lucky your iPhone does not have an issue, I didnt do what you all do and say """No way, its you, its the way you type that effects the keyboard, hold the laptop differently and the screen will be great""" Apple finally admitted there was an issue and came out with FW updates them and do hardware replacements and extend warranties

yeah well when I have had verizon for a year and NEVER dropped a call and then I take the iphone out and drop my very first call, you dont need to be an f'n scientist to realize there's an issue. And if you watched the video the signal clearly goes from 3-4 bars to 1 in 30 seconds of holding the phone, death grip or not, I can just place it in my hand, if any skin is over the bottom left gap, the signal drops

So, I'm assuming that the death grip happens to only a few customers, and not everyone, right?

Would exchanging the phone fix the problem, maybe?

I'm hoping that when I get mine, I don't get this same problem.

But instead of using a bumper, what if you use a skin to cover the sides...although, that's just changing the color, so I'm assuming that it won't fix anything.

But it potentially could.

1 it happens to everyone, the ones who claim they don't have that problem are liars
2 exchanging wont fix it since it's a manufacturing defect
3 any bumper or case covering the "Achilles Gap" will keep you from dropping signal and calls.

thank you JD,,, finally someone with a clue and not constantly defending Apple

The death grip (where signal drops completely) only affects a phone when used in an areas with a weak or moderate signal. This is the same with any phone, however the iPhone 4 seems to have its antenna positioned in a way that is more vulnerable than other phones. I own a 3G and a 4. I can reproduce the "death grip" effect on my iPhone 4 at work, where signal is weak. I cannot on my 3G. However, where signal is excellent, I am unable to get the iPhone 4 to drop even one bar.

I agree with you here. Following the massive backlash in relation to the antenna that Apple had when they first released the iPhone 4, there was at least some anticipation that Apple would have gone to some lengths to solve the problem (i.e., make it so that one point on the device doesn't massively deteriorate your signal!). However, it appears that Apple haven't done anything to resolve this. There's a good chance the Verizon iPhone 4 has been in development for just as long as the GSM iPhone 4 so it's design may have been fixed at a very early stage before the antenna problems became public.

I certainly think Apple will have fixed this design error by the time the iPhone 5 rolls out; they would be fools not too!

I wouldn't be surprised if the problem remained on iP5

Instead of real world testing, they conducted their test in a billion dollar room to do their signal test. Trained monkeys were also used in testing and not people.

I do not defend Apple, but maybe I defend some nameless researcher who have to deal with these problems. You can bet that the next antenna is reworked and they try to get rid of the problem but its not that easy I can tell you. If they use a different coating they maybe will be able to eliminate the actual "antenna gate" problem but how to deal with hands? The problem to get the signal through the hand without losing strengths is not solved yet.

If you like to play with your new (or old) iPhone4 put your index finger next to the antenna gate. Signal will drop (its 1 bar here) without even touching it. Even your personal magnetic field influences the signals reception.

:)

For all the naysayers, here's my iPhone 4 when held normally in my left hand (which is the hand I use predominently to operate the phone). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DWCtEh0yRw

The reason I know it's an issue with the iPhone is because a different, low end phone on the same network, held in the same way, in the same location, doesn't lose enough signal to drop to 'no service' like the iPhone does. Let's hope Apple get this fixed by the iPhone 5!
