Apple today released watchOS 8.3, the second major update to the watchOS 8 operating system that first launched in September. watchOS 8.3 comes more than a month after the launch of watchOS 8.1, and it is not known why Apple skipped version 8.2.

‌‌watchOS ‌8.3 can be downloaded for free through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General > Software Update. To install the new software, the Apple Watch needs to have at least 50 percent battery, it needs to be placed on a charger, and it needs to be in range of the ‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌.

The watchOS 8.3 update is compatible with the Apple Watch Series 3 and later like all watchOS 8 updates.

According to Apple's release notes, watchOS 8.3 adds support for the voice-only Apple Music Voice Plan, which is designed to allow users to ask Siri to play Apple Music songs, playlists, and stations.

The update also introduces support for App Privacy Report, a feature that monitors when apps access sensitive data and sensors that are restricted by privacy settings, such as location information, and it fixes an issue that could cause notifications to interrupt Mindfulness sessions unexpectedly. Though not included in the release notes, watchOS 8.3 expands AssistiveTouch to the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5.

Details on what's included in the ‌watchOS 8‌ update can be found in our watchOS roundup.

What's the best way to update the watch? Through the Watch app on the phone? Or through Settings on the watch itself?

I just upgraded from the S2, so my memory is a little fuzzy about the updating process since I haven't had to do it for a couple years. Is doing it directly on the watch faster than doing it through the phone?

Edit: Guess I really didn't have much of a choice. I put the watch on the charger and it was already downloading the update before I did anything.

I haven’t been able to update to any version of watchOS 8 this whole time…any idea why? I’m on iOS 15.2, just updated, and it still says my current watchOS 7.6.2 is up to date. Series 4 watch.

Apple Watch is still not syncing iMessages properly between iphone. I respond to a text on my iPhone, and 5-10 mins later the same message i responded to on my iPhone pops up on my watch. Very frustrating.

The Apple Watch STILL has iMessage syncing issues!!! My issue is that when I delete a text on my device, iPhone, Apple Watch, etc. they don't always delete off all my other devices. This has been a long persistent problem and I've sent in feedback multiple times. These are basic functions that should "just work". Getting ready to throw all my Apples in the trash bin.

Apple Watch's Message syncing either isn't designed to sync as we expect, or it is actually broken. It's terrible.

Deleting message from iPhone doesn't also delete it from the Watch. Syncing in Messages works well across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but it doesn't fully work with the Watch.

I don't get it. I would think that every time the Message app on the Watch is opened, it can do a quick sync with iCloud Messages to ensure that appropriate messages that have been deleted from other devices are also deleted on the Watch. Why isn't that happening?

You are correct. The syncing with the watch isn't designed to sync with Messages in iCloud or other devices as we'd like it too. It has been like this since the beginning and isn't "broken". Deleting a message on the phone has never deleted it from the watch, and vice versa. I do wish they would change that though.

I believe the watch is currently designed to hold the last 30 days of messages.

*Mindfulness, I actually had to shut this feature off. Literally kept pinging me on my way to work every morning, in aggravating traffic. Nah, this simply won't work! ?
