I don't know. I still don't see the need of a rear facing camera on the next iPad. I get the whole front facing camera for use with FaceTime and PhotoBooth, but not a rear facing camera (call me wrong). I mean it makes sense on devices like the iPhone and the iPod Touch (which took forever and a day to add for the iPad Touch) because they are great photography and shooting video. But are you really going to be using the next iPad for that? Its not practical...its a 10-inch device, but that's just my opinion.

Just because you do not have a use for a rear facing camera on the iPad doesn't mean everyone else is in your shoes.

I for one have a huge need for one, it would be very productive for my needs.

I didn't forget the VGA adapter, but I purposely didn't mention it because the dock port is a universal video out port. It can be purposed for any type of video output that Apple chooses and that is why they sell many different adapters for it. Doesn't matter if it is VGA, Component, Composite, or (potentially) HDMI or MDP. I knew you would bring this up though, and I just couldn't leave our wonderful conversation unfinished.
Again with the adapters argument. The only retort you've come up with it is "herp derp well since they ship an SD Card slot adapter that means that it's more likely they'll include it herp derp". While ignoring the fact that they ship video out adapters. All you did was pull a straw man.

Also yes you can use the VGA adapter with the dock, you simply plug the adapter into the back of the dock. The dock connector is designed to be the only A/V hook up on Apple's devices, other than the headphone jack. They aren't going to change years of design to put a really odd MDP port on the top. Plus what happens when you plug in video out on the dock connector and the MDP port at the same time? What is the point in that?
Years of design? The iPad isn't even a year old. You mention the headphone jack just to save yourself but guess what? That will also be coming out of the top should you decide to use that like a moron while it's docked. Not everything is designed to be intuitive with the plastic dock Apple ships. Their own damn case doesn't even work with it.

Sure anything is "possible" but the probability is incredibly low.
No, it really isn't incredibly low. Apple clearly cared enough to put a video out port on the incredibly low on space first gen MacBook Air for a reason.

The fact is that the SD card slot is more probable because of the demand for the camera connection kits. Apple sold out of those for weeks at a time, while the VGA adapters all got returned (and barely bought at all) once people realized how useless it was.
OHHHH so I see how it is. Now you are just going to try and twist your way out of this. If the VGA adapters did supposedly get returned then it was because Apple made it limiting and no other reason. Apple has included a video out port on all of their machines for as long as I could remember. SD card slots are relatively new to the Mac but a port for video out has always been there. Why is that?

Besides, everyone keeps ignoring the fact that none of these leaked cases have a hole cut out for the microphone, which means the hole at the top is the most likely place for a new improved microphone.
It COULD be a microphone but unlikely due to how big the opening is in the case. It COULD also be a MDP no matter how hard you try on proving otherwise with your SD card slot defense.

So in terms of the chances of the things happening, they go in this order:

FaceTime w/ Front Facing Camera
Rear Facing Camera
Faster processor
More memory
Better Speaker & Microphone
...then way at the bottom of the list of chances...
SD Card Slot (a second SD Card slot port besides the dock connector)
Mini-Display Port (a second video output port besides the dock connector)
Retina Display
Fix'd based on your criteria.

Like any facetime setup, back camera is for show & tell. If you were to facetime, you can show your family or friend at the same time you are seeing your friend or family.

Exactly. I use Facetime for that all the time. It's great for instructing someone how to do something.
I was able to show my parents, 800 miles away, where to connect their Mac Mini to their A/V system.
They showed me the back of the components and I could guide them as they connected the cables.
The rear camera on the iPhone is great for stuff like that. It will be just as good or maybe even better on an iPad.

Anyone noticed, that the calendar icon on this shot shows a "9"?

My iPad shows a "27" in the preferences, as iPad 1 was introduced January 27th 2010.
So my guess, iPad 2 will be introduced February 9th 2011 !!

Interesting observation. And why would the leak of the new photo with the icons be there now unless they were bringing the development of iOS 4.3 to a near completion?

Though I understand that not much can be said from this screenshot from 9to5mac that was posted a few days ago, I can't think of a time in the last 6 months were I have actually used the front camera of my iPhone 4 to record video. So if Apple only intends to make use of the Camera app for a front camera, then isn't that the point of the PhotoBooth app?

Point being, I am sure their will be a front and back camera.

This is the actual iPad camera app?

Agree: anyone taking a photo with such a device would look a right donut

I think you are clueless.

But that's 3 weeks away! Can't wait that long!

I think it depends on the quality of the camera.

Barcode / qr-code scanning would be a useful but that only works well if they don't put in another crappy fix-focus camera.

You could also use the iPad to place offers on eBay. You could enter product information and take the photo instantly with the same device. But again this is only possible if the camera has good quality. (Close up and indoor)

Except that when you stop viewing it as a camera, and start seeing it as a live video feed, things change. Augmented reality in apps such as Star Walk (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/star-walk-5-stars-astronomy/id295430577?mt=8) or Word Lens (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/word-lens/id383463868?mt=8) are prime examples of how this can be useful. The ability to show people things in front of you while in a Facetime chat is also awesome, so you don't have to awkwardly manoeuvre your device to get it in shot.

Nobody expects people to walk around with an iPad instead of a point and shoot camera or phone, but it's a useful feature.

Introduced or started to sell on that date? I will be ticked-off if it's the latter as I'm in the US till the 7th, and being British I absolutely love paying extra for no reason (the only real benefit of buying electronics in the UK is that you can usually have things fixed out of warranty if in a certain rough period).

I've read a lot of the posts in this topic and agree that having all three of these icons does mean a backwards facing camera too. If I will ever use it, I'm not so sure personally! Would be fun to swap between front/rear on Facetime, but that's a novelty.

You never know what apps could be made for the enterprise segment.

Those are just things off the top of your head. It would be crazy NOT to include a camera on the device.

You'd think they'd avoid putting any of this code in a public build so that they can try to keep some secrets for their launch. Of course, most of this stuff has been worked on for months, so it's probably difficult to avoid completely.

There is no public build. Anyone receiving this build is under NDA - doesn't help much though. On the other hand, since people make all kind of conclusions based on an icon somewhere in a development pre-release, what stops Apple from adding random icons to these pre-releases?

Jan 27th 2010 was also a Wednesday.

And Feb 9th is my birthday! Give me something nice, Apple

IMHO, no higher resolution screen (not retina, just higher resolution) - lame upgrade.

I think iPad 2 having camera(s) was proven multiple times already.

I hope soon... it will be nice to finally know what's coming. I was thinking before MacWorld like last year, but seems unlikely they would announce next Wednesday at this point.

P.S. I am SOOOOO TIRED of hearing people say, FaceTime, but we're not sure about a back camera. These people simply don't understand Apple PERIOD! So let me explain............. A BACK CAMERA IS PART OF FACETIME!!! Part of the experience is flipping the camera around, that is one of the main highlight features of FaceTime. If there is FaceTime there will be TWO cameras PERIOD! Apple will not deliver a partial user experience! You'd think MacRumors would get that  And that's not even to mention the potential a back camera has with apps using that as functionality, AR, etc.!

How about Facetime for mac?
Apple's announced a beta for it, does that mean the next mbp will have a rear camera?

Apple need something big this year. They've known about Steve for a while now and his leave was carefully planned. It was obvious that share value would be hit by the news.

This is why you might be surprised by what iPad2 delivers, as well as iPhone5 and some other products later this year.

I expect a res bump for the iPad2 - probably significant.

I believe Steve is unlikely to be back at Apple in any major capacity and the products this year will be his parting shot and the crutch APPL need to lean on.

Excellent sticking point. I think many will be pleasantly surprised with the specs of the upcoming hardware releases (iPad 2 and iPhone 5 in particular). These two devices are certainly "halo" products because of their wide success. It only makes sense to deliver a strong product offering on Steve's departure to sustain or exceed customer demand, brand recognition, etc. It'll be interesting to watch this unfold (as always).
