The iPhone 4 is remarkable. Facetime was fluid, not like webcams and skype, but as realtime as it gets. I was blown away with my first facetime call. RUN TO YOUR STORE AND GET ONE. The display is clear, and incredible.

I'm at a loss for words how good this is! :)

Err..running to the store won't do **** today :) it's not like there are anymore for sale...anywhere.

Im loving it!! Speedy, great looking crisp display, great camera for a phone even front facing cam is decent. Facetime is cool new email enhancements are nice. WE NEED SOME MORE CASES!!!..(but black bumper with invisible shield is cool)

I'm so excited I got it today, I'm off work & it arrived, (I had it shipped there) so my co-workers let me know that it was in!!

A few things,

- I ordered through AT&T Premier. I know a bunch of people are worried that because of ordering through that they won't get it on time.

- My Fed EX tracking order still says its at "dest sort facility" in Houston (about 30 minutes away!)

- My arrival date wasn't until tomorrow.

I have so much to do today, it's my bf's bday, he has AT&T & I am going to give him my iPhone 3gs, does all he need to do is put his SIM in it & it work?? He has a blackberry right now. Or do we have to do something special?

Must be different for women. If I got the iPhone 4 brand new on my wife's birthday, handing over the previous model would not be seen as generosity, in fact I'd probably be sleeping on the couch for a week just for that.

Ordered my iPhone at June 15 around around 2PM from the ATT store and was in and out pretty quick in Greenville NC. Got my phone on June 23rd, day before the release around lunch time. Couldn't get it activated online, called 611 and they activated it over the phone with in 2 minutes and even gave a courtesy call an hour later to make sure everything was working fine and if I had any questions. Great service! Phone is pretty slick, and really fast. Everything is like apple said it was. Such an improvement from 3G. Very pleased. I thought it was funny how everyone condemns AT&T and says not to use them to get the phone, but I sure as hell had no problem and it beat standing in line for hours on end. I guess using an AT&T store in a small college town is probably better than going to Raleigh/Cary and doing it.

Just some initial impressions:

Coming from an original iPhone, this new one is in another league. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet, but already I love the speed and responsiveness, not to mention the stunning display. Got a black "bumper", but I'm still really paranoid about dropping the thing. Will need to get a screen protector ASAP. (I want the Crystal Film set by Power Support--it served my old iPhone really well.) Amazingly, the Apple Store had none in stock--the only kind of case/protector they had was the bumper. The back of the thing seems much more prone to smudges and fingerprints; the front much less so (as advertised). Overall, though, I'm really, really impressed!

Quick question regarding the SIM card, can i use my 3G iphone's card? I've been reading around it uses a Micro sim card, which isn't like other devices and since i think the 3g iphone's card is just like all other devices it occured to me that this could be an issue. Sorry if the question is dumb, i haven't received my iphone and i rather avoid issues when i do get it. Thanks

Been reading about the signal dropping...I have used the phone and have no problems whatsoever! I love the new phone, and the front loading video is awesome. I am able to video myself and send it to my grandchildren.
Hopefully my daughter will be getting hers soon so we can do some facetime talking.

This thing is ****ing awesome!

I came from a dumbphone this thing is just nuts!

No signal issues different than dumbphone.

I typed this on my new iphone4 while riding in a car:)

I first was going to wait as I like to see if any problems occur with the phone. However! I am glad so far I went and got the phone. So far it's great. Great display, speedy, and flash!! I really didn't listen much about the display was thinking the 3GS looked good enough, I was wrong!

The iPhone 4 just looks so much better and I can't believe I'm looking at a phone. It's insane. I'm so happy to finally have flash. And iMovie is great tried for like 5 secs made a 25 sec clip with transactions and a theme with the theme music. Looked pretty good for doing it in literally 5-10 secs.

Can't wait to play with iMovie more(iPhone 4 only sorry peeps) and see what I can create. And the limited time with FaceTime was smooth and lagless.

Well to answer my own question the IPhone 4 sim card is not the same as the other phone or other iPhones for that matter, so you will have to use it with the pre-installed sim card which is linked to the upgraded account or account that was used to purchase the iPhone. If you use someone elses account then you may have to go to a store and get a new sim card. Hope this could help anyone with a similar question.

This device is great. The hardware is absolutely beautiful and well made, especially compared to my 3GS, which now seems cheap and bloated. The screen lives up to the hype, and really is kind of "magical." It doesn't look like a screen with pixels, kind of hard to describe until you actually use one. The camera is fantastic as well. And of course, iOS4 is fantastic. I am so thrilled with my new iPhone, and luckily no yellow screen issues or major reception issues either!

Have you guys tried the compass. It actually works now and doesn't point in random directions! I think thats thanks to the gyroscope.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I've played quite a bit on my father's and my brother's. So this First Impression may not be perfect.

-- This thing is THIN. I likey. :D
-- Screen is gorgeous.
-- Camera flash SUCKS, but only if you still have the back plastic still on it.
-- Fast, fast, FAST. Again, I likey.
-- With the signal issue, neither phones had it... In fact, when I attempted to recreate the problem, the signal actually went from 3/4 bars of 3G to full.. :p
-- For the screen issue, I guess we got lucky again, as I didn't notice any thing wrong. (And anyone that knows me knows that I'm a tad insane when it comes to quality, and even moreso when it comes to Apple products.)

Posted from my (brother's) iPhone 4. :D

How is the built in speaker compared to the 3GS? I often find myself using it as a boombox in my pocket when I'm doing some work or something around the house.

I don't have a 3 gs, but the speaker is loud enough for speakerphone and games.

Coming from a dumbphone, the call volume in normal mode is very quiet, even on max.

The text clarity is brilliant, I can actually read these forums more clearly than I can on my ****** computer!

The display is unreal. It's really like print!

This is my first iphone and all I can say is, it was well worth the wait. I had almost bought a 3gs about 5 months ago before I read about this model coming out this summer.

Mine works perfectly. Down here in the South (Louisiana) ATT has excellent coverage. We get 5 bars all across the city all the time, which is why I was wondering what all the fuss was about with ATT dropping calls. Never happens here. Guess I'm in iphone heaven. I see no difference in signal strength at all, no matter where I am or how I hold it. I don't doubt all the reports about grounding out the antenna by touching it, but for us it's a non-issue. Since a case seems to help prevent it, maybe using an invisible shield (as in screen protector film) over the actual antenna could do the same. Could be a simple fix, (hey Steve, it's my idea. How about some $$$ compensation for it if it works?)

But anyway, I had none of the problems other people are reporting such as a yellow edge on the screen, or ATT taking forever to activate (took about 5 min with online activation).

I'm using a usb wireless network adaptor which turns my computer into a wifi hotspot, (not ad hoc), so I can play around with all the online features without cutting into my 2GB data plan. All the apps work great: Weather Channel, Drudge Report reader, Google Earth, Pandora, myWireless app, Fox News app, 5-0 Radio, Safari, YouTube. etc. They all load fast and work as well as my computer.

All in all, one of my better investments next to my 2009 Honda 600RR. *grin*

First iPhone and I have to say that I really like it! I'm still getting used to the virtual keyboard (came from a Blackberry) but otherwise everything is great so far!

I think the iPhone 4 is a great phone. Super fast. Amazing screen. It's the 1st day I've had it and don't have any complaints.

My friend and I even love the new FanTime feature that's new on this phone.

I have had my iPhone 4 since the 23rd.

My impressions:

1) The screen is amazing. The images are incredibly crisp. It actually makes my iPad screen look almost bad. :D

2) So far I have mine naked and while I love that it is thinner and smaller, I find it difficult to grip properly compared to the old phone. I have a blue bumper on order and I hope that alleviates that problem. For now I actually put it in my old Iskin solo case from my 3gs which doesn't fit right obviously, but well enough for the moment and provides some grip.

3) I ran across my old iPod dock from about 5 years ago the other day, and lo and behold, the iPhone fits in it and charges. If any of you have old docks lying around they can get some new life.

Ahhh ... all y'all must have ordered from AT&T Premier, I see. Nice FANs. :p

I really popped into this thread to say that I frickin' LOVE my iPhone. I'm a longtime Mac user but first time iPhone owner. :apple: This thing is truly amazing. I hate to use that word with regard to the device since it seems like *everyone* says it; but there's a reason for that -- it *is* an amazing phone. :D

I'm in heaven

This is an awesome phone. My screen is beautiful, I haven't been able to get the phone to drop calls (never dropped with my 3G either), and it is lightning fast. I did some playing around with my daughter's 3G last night, running side by side comparisons, and I couldn't believe how much faster the 4 was, on everything. (She's now insanely jealous, but is waiting for the white model).

FaceTime is a hoot - my dogs got to talk on the phone too! And my car charger still works - glory hallelujah!

By the way

I know some are experiencing problems, and it is being reported as being widespread. But when you consider the amount of phones sold, the number of issues being reported truly is a minute fraction of total sold. The thing is, no one is counting all of the people who are thrilled - that's not as big a news story.

This is my first post on MacRumors! I've been lurking for years though.

Overall I'm very happy with my new iPhone 4. I've had the 3g and 3gs in the past.

Screen: Much sharper and clearer, especially for text. It makes the older low rez apps really obvious. Unfortunately it has a slightly yellowish tinge compared to my 3gs. Same thing happened last year with my 3gs and I returned 3 of them before getting an acceptable display. This one isn't quite so bad so I'll wait out the "drying" process and see if it gets better before I exchange it.

Reception: I've never had an issue with reception in the Austin area. I live out in the country and it's even great out here. Unfortunately my iPhone 4 antennae shorts out when I hold it so my reception is pretty awful. I presume enough people will complain and there will be some kind of fix. SJ's initial "you're holding wrong" response will get so much back lash from the community that they'll at least have to offer free bumper cases. If not it's not a deal breaker for me. Just an unfortunate drawback to an otherwise amazing product.

Speed: Wow, it seems like things happen when you just think about it! App open on my way to pressing them, haha. The camera is super fast too which was a headache with the 3gs. The back up and syncing seems to be a lot faster too.

Camera: I'm in photo/video heaven with this thing. I take a ton of pictures and videos with my band so this will be an amazing upgrade to that part of my life. Touch to zoom in video works great! The flash is invaluable! Everything looks amazing! I can take pictures of myself and do video blogs. Very happy with the camera.

Battery: I guess I've just been using it more and I want to have the brightness all the way up to indulge in the new display, but it seems to be draining pretty fast. I'll let it go through a few charge cycles before I make judgement.

Build/Body... would be a huge improvement if I didn't have to buy a case that covers it up in order to avoid touching the antennae. Feels solid and expensive though. All the buttons feel much better

Sound: I'm a professional music producer (I have a gold album and have been listed in the top ten producers in the SXSW music awards) and in my opinion I prefer the sound of the 3gs. It's just a bit more open sounding with better highs and lows. The i4 sounds a bit mid rangy and muddy in comparison. This is in nice studio headphone and through my car stereo. It's also evident through the phones speaker.

Overall this is a huge improvement. If I can get a sweet case that improves the reception problem and the screen either fixes it's yellowness or can be replaced with one that's not yellow I'll be a very happy for the next year.
