A bit of an odd question - just tried to install the keyboard update, but was told that I have to be connected to an AC source. Why?

It is only a few hundred kb, so not a major install - I have 98% battery life which should suffice - now I have to wait 9-10 hours until I get home and have access to the power cable.

Seems a bit odd to me.
I believe this is because it updates the actual firmware on the computer, and if the update process is interrupted (example: battery runs out), the process gets interrupted and your keyboard may not work at all.

I bought my 2.16 CD MBP in June or July 06. This update does not show up in my software update (running Leopard). I guess this is not an issue for me?

Hey guys!
Everytime I am running "Software update", even after installing the keyboard firmware update, it is still showing up everytime as a new update??????!!!!!

I think what you are seeing is after downloading the update, the Software Update app checks again for more updates (because of the recently updated software). If it does not find any new updates, it will just display the update that you just downloaded. There is a green circle or something next to it showing that it has been downloaded/installed. All this means is that you have installed that update and there are no more updates after updating that one.

There is nothing wrong with what is happening. That is the way it works.

the update doesn't show up for my core duo MBP. i ran software update 2 or 3 times, but nothing. guess I don't need it. I haven't noticed the problem on my machine...

Argh why is it Leopard only??

Because you haven't paid Apple the $129 it deserves so you can update their buggy keyboard firmware.

Version numbers aren't decimals. They just look that way. And logic never did anyone any good.

Hey, I use numbers with two decimal places all the time - oh, wait, no, nobody does.

I'm surprised they released a fix, since it looked like there were just going to ignore it.

Somebody probably mentioned 'class action'...

Removing the battery disables on of the CPU cores.

errr... My Macbook gets warmer if I disable one core (processor preferences) because the heat is concentrated on one core and thus is harder to cool. Batteries are warm when in use, especially when charging. Also, removing the battery allows air to get directly to the laptop's frame which is good for cooling.

Mine installed with no trouble. I don't think I had that bug anyways. At least, I never noticed the problem happening. But it's good to know that it should be prevented in the future with this update.

I'm happy with this update, it's added three extra keys. It's a pity that Tiger users didn't get it too though :(

Thank you so much Apple. I was feeling quite upset today in life and this has made my day feel a bit better. I've always wonder whether it's my keyboard being too new so it doesn't register the key as sensitive as I would like it to or whether it's defective or not. I never feel comfortable typing on the keyboard on the Macbook because it somehow miss some keystrokes (not necessarily the first one) since I type fast (100wpm+). Now the keyboard feels so much more sensitive and I feel confident typing on the Macbook again without error.

Thank you so much. I thought I was the only one experiencing this.

Just wondering, do you people ever send feedback or bug issues to Apple via their web form to inform them about these things? If not, how do they know?

Advantage

now I have to wait 9-10 hours until I get home and have access to the power cable.

That also means that you have 9 to 10 hours for other people to beta test the patch and see if there are reports of problems.

I just don't understand why people would rush to install a patch while they are using their system away from home. That's riscy computing...be safe, not sorry.

This took me a while to figure out too. Basically, people vote against fixes (i.e negative) if the fix released isn't the exact fix THEY want.

The interweb is a weird place, huh?

It's not that weird, and wouldn't take you a while to figure out, if you bothered to RTFT.

The fix only works with Leopard, although it affects Tiger users as well.

So, my 17" MBP isn't on the update list. I have one of the original 17" MBPs and it has been going down hill pretty rapidly. I have many of the sleep problems described but thats not even the worst problem. I would love it if Apple got off their asses and fixed the heat issues. 190 degrees when gaming isn't acceptable. Well, of course its not acceptable. The machine locks when it gets that high.

Removing the battery drops the temp about 40 degrees. WHY ?? *40 degrees !?*

Sorry, I know my post has little to do with the topic. I am just pissed that this update won't fix the problems that my machine is having. I am also getting very pissed about Apples response to the heat issues. This is *NOT* normal.

The temperature could drop 40 degrees with the battery removed for many reasons, one is that in the MBPs, the CPU clock speed is significantly slower with no battery (get a CPU Monitoring app that is able to monitor the CPU clock and see how low it goes for your model), also you have less insulation, and you have no heat from the battery itself, wether it is charging or discharging.

Yes, people send feedback. They don't sit around wondering if their keyboard should/shouldn't be dropping keystrokes because "it's too new."

This issue has been on Apple's discussion board for months. And for you and others to issue "thank yous" to Apple for finally fixing this (only for Leopard users), is pitiful.

I've had the same problem with my MB since i bought it july 06. I've taken it to the apple store 3x: first time they kept it, checked it out, and said nothing was wrong; second time they diagnosed a faulty keyboard and sent it out for replacement (took about a week); third time they just checked it at the genius bar and said they didn't feel anything wrong. It's NOT horrible...just much higher missed-stroke count than on other keyboards.

I was hoping this might fix that, but i get the response that i don't need this update. Anyone know how to find out whether a july 06 MB is a "late 06" model? apparently not. And is there anyway to look at system profiler to determine whether they keyboard's running the right version? somewhere in this thread a person said it updated them from 0.13 to 0.18. but my system profiler says "Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: Version: 0.64"

I thought it was just me whenever I would start typing it would miss the first letter. Glad it was a bug and Apple fixed it.

Both "Cores" are physically located on the same Die. You make absolotely no sense.

And if you knew anything about CPU cooling or for that matter how apple laptops dissipate heat you'd realize how retarded you sound.

Anyone notice the lights??

On the keyboard, I mean. The automatic keyboard illumination has been pretty wonky with 10.5.2, and I haven't noticed yet on mine if this is one of the "Other issues" this update addresses. Anyone? Anyone?

So here's the dilemma. Stick with Tiger and lose the first key stroke after keyboard inactivity or reinstall Leopard, fix the keyboard issue but lose airport connectivity. Hmmm.....

Thanks Apple for finding a fix. :D
F-U Apple for making it for Leopard only.
