This was the worst preorder in Apple's history

no..... it was the iphone 6 preorder (and the initial watch preorder)... both of those sucked!

this one... while not perfect... was ok (well... unless you wanted a jet black phone...)

still not the best even though we are getting on launch day... I remember last year being pretty good...

I gave up on release day when they started this 12am PDT stuff. I can't get up at 2am my time to order then go to bed, then get back up at 5am for work. I can, impatiently, wait a couple weeks for it to arrive.

The watch wasn't even bad. Sure, I ordered the space black watch with the space black buckle that was this year's jet black 7+ phone and didn't get it for a month, but we also ordered a regular stainless steel watch with a milanese loop and got it on launch day. Though I didn't get the watch I wanted on launch day, the process was a breeze - just like every other order placed on the app directly through apple.
 
Web site and Store App connected 12:05 12:06 PST respectively.

I didn't see any Jet Black but I went with matte black 7+ 256 GB. Picking it up on the iPhone upgrade program next Friday.
 
I just love these threads... This ain't nothing! I'm a warrior of several of these. If anything, it was smoother than most. I tried for the Jet black 7+ and it was gone 9 minutes after launch, the soonest I could get in. So my second favorite, which I setup before hand was available, and took the Gold 7+ 256GB. It's going to go in a case anyway, so the color really won't matter to me.

this was soooooo smooth for me. 2 years ago i stayed up for a half hour refreshing. this year, i woke up at 2, got on the apple store app, ordered, and went back to sleep. didn't even get out of bed.
 
Everyone should have known supply would be short. I think macrumors had an article on it earlier in the week. Throw in they are only releasing two storage options tells me there was a supply issue. While not perfect I think it went as expected.

You are right Apple becoming worst every year, this time the site went up shortly after 3 AM EDT but the iPhone 7+ 128 in jet black was set to ship after 10/4 so its mean Apple sell product that they don't have in stuck yet.
i didn't buy it yet look like i am going to suck with my iPhone 6S plus for longer, nothing wrong with that,
my point is Apple will loose for the long run. because they killed my desire to upgrade every year.

This right here. I wasted time going in and opting to do in-store pickup only to be shown that the only available model for pickup was rose gold (in all capacities). Started over and got quite a few errors in the app so I eventually said forget it and got in bed.

After I had been lying there for several minutes I decided to give it one more shot and it went straight through. My 128GB black is set for delivery Oct. 4th - 10th. Hoping for those magical slipping shipping dates.
 
I'll say what I say every year that this is posted. The worst pre-orders are when the item is widely available in STORES before people with pre-orders get theirs. This happened on the original iPod Touch. I know it's happened a couple other times, too. As long as the general public who didn't pre-order aren't able to jump the line (in a widespread way - not the fluke one or two), then a pre-order functions exactly as intended and you get them in the order they were received. I may not like my Oct dates from ATT, but the pre-order is working.
 
Here's my thoughts:
  1. They had woefully low volume of Jet Black models for supply in the first few weeks.
  2. The Plus model seems a lot more popular this year and I am not sure they expected that.
  3. The 256Gb is just too pricey (certainly in the UK) so this placed more demand on the 128Gb models.
  4. The launch of two major products on the same day/time battered their servers more than usual. Can't recall them doing this before and have to wonder if that contributed significantly to people not being able to get the store to load.
  5. Not sure it is worth queueing at an Apple store next week as I think there are going to be really low volumes of the two blacks, particularly the Plus model. Reckon you'll be okay with Silver Gold or Rose Gold as we have seen on pre-order.
  6. Gutted that I have missed out on launch day delivery this year but life goes on :(

Nah, I think worst was still the 6+ in 2014.

I fell asleep and woke up at my regular schedule of 4:30-5am Pacific and all iPhone 7 models aside from Jet Black were still available for 9/16 delivery.
 
There was a delay last night for sure, but unlike with the 6 I was able to complete my order for launch day delivery once the store became open for me with no lag.

It wasn't perfect, but it was better than 2014 for sure.

Only way OP could think this is if it was their first preorder experience. There is no comparison between this pre order and 6 and watch pre orders.

The funny thing about me saying that is that I ordered Jet Black Plus this go round and it doesn't seem like that was available launch date at all. Both the 6 Plus and the watch I got on launch day and still count those experiences as far worse than this one.
 
The actual ordering part was the easiest I've ever had. Used the Apple Store app. Had my phone saved to my favorite and checked out with Apple Pay. I'm just a little bummed that I might not receive it on launch day.
