How about if the touch ID section was not normal screen?
I looked invisible to the naked eye, and all black screen, but the lower section with the touch ID was not real screen, but like a swipe left/right only separate area like the MP touch bar.
So this lower section was not usable in general, only to display certain things at the bottom?

How would you feel about this?

Just awful because most of the benefit of having a 5.8" screen would be wasted.

Being an Apple version 1 guinea pig for 11 years, I'm going to sit this one out and wait for 8s.
I was an Apple version 1 guinea pig until I skipped the iPhone 7.

Never really regretted it before, so I'm getting the iPhone 8. Can't wait to get back on the ride!

How's the S8 working out for Samsung so far? Is it really as good as its marketing? But then there's Android...

I've got one and absolutely love it.

It's not flawless but definitely superb in most ways. The form factor and build quality are second to none.

If Apple basically did their own version of it, that would be one amazing iPhone.

How could that be when the entire Galaxy line is a knockoff of the iphone to begin with?

That doesn't make any sense. And calling a grown man Timmy makes you sound childish.

It's pretty clear Samsung copied Apple, and then Apple have been copying Samsung for the past few years, and the two will ding-dong for the foreseeable future.

As I said when I used the Galaxy S6 Edge a few years ago. That phone with iOS would have been amazing. I don't know about the current Galaxy lineup, but the build quality of that phone was fantastic.

I've got an S8 and the build quality is beyond belief.

As I said a couple of posts up, an Apple version of the S8 would be awesome.

Anyway all these manufacturers are constantly copying one another now.

I'm most excited about this feature and the full front screen that comes with it! Was debating skipping this year if the finger print sensor was on the back.

What a witty and original response, you should write a book

Thanks. I was always told I would go far (as far away as possible).
They also said I should be on the stage. Sweeping it. ("Gerroff!"-MR Mods)

However 'fact is ... Apple's secrecy clamp down on new features is either at full effectiveness. Or more likely (whisper it) there might not be an awful lot to keep secret compared to the glory years.

Either way - as somebody else on here wistfully observed - in five years it'll all in the be landfill anyway.

Life goes on - from a time when we used to worry about more important issues than Touch ID placements.

And apparently (according to Siri anyway) there still is!.

Siri! Can you tell me what to worry about next?.

What do you mean think for myself? And get out more? Right. You're going in the landfill!

I'm not sure why Touch ID on the back is such a negative for people. If it leads to a edge to edge screen I don't see people rejecting such a placement.

It's a bad placement from day one. Can't unlock your phone while it's on the desk where you just want to check the phone without lifting. And S8 made it worse by placing next to camera. I've tried S8 in store I can barely reach the sensor without touching camera lens by accident.

Will be the most ugliest iPhone ever. Like the Samsung Galaxy S8 is disgusting. Don't understand the need for smaller bezels, dark mode, etc...
In the old days  released a product and we all went "wow, that's what I wanted, tx Steve". And now it's "we want this and that" not knowing why we want it.
Curved display is a gimmick, nothing more.

You're right. I would rather have a phone with the same design year after year and being charged as if its a complete new (hard and software) redesign

It's awkward to use. On the front you can hold the phone with one hand and use any finger from the other. Or you can one hand it and use your thumb. Or if it's sitting on a table you can use any finger from either hand. (Obviously, yes, you have to teach the finger to the phone, but most people teach multiple fingers from both hands. I know I do).

With the sensor on the back you can't activate with your fingers if it's sitting on a table -- eyes, yes, but not finger. That is a security compromise to ApplePay and any app that uses TouchID for verification. You can't naturally hold it with one hand and activate with another.
Most of this post above is garbage. I roll with both a plus size iPhone and the Nexus 6P and I can tell you definitively that the placement on the back of the device is not an issue. For contactless pay you press the phone with the screen side down and it works just fine. For unlocking and holding, it is also fine: look at where your thumb is after you unlock your iPhone? Its on the side of the phone, with the other fingers grasping the other side. Having the fingerprint sensor on the back actually makes the phone more secure as you never need to go away from the thumb and fingers grasp that you would normally use to hold the phone. The index finger just needs to temporarily move to the unlock circle and then back to the edge. The one thing that makes unlocking any phone unsecure is a crappy fingerprint reader as you need to hold the phone in a less secure position to get it to unlock. The faster and better the unlock mechanism the more you limit any awkward holding and hence insecurity.

Haha how is this rumor any more or less credible than the others (other than this is the one we all prefer so we want to believe it to be true)?
It's not but given the context and previous rumor about scheduling it seems like it could be legitimate. And it makes sense, as it's not like they were choosing between the options equally - this was the first option and the others were fallback options. And yeah, I really want to believe it :D. I think we'll know for sure in June.

I am taking this with a grain of salt. We will see the iPhone OLED model around September - October time.

that is 200% rubbish and you know it. having a fingerprint sensor on the back is bullocks mate.

Touch ID on the back is actually not a big deal. The way people hold their phones, having it on the back would actually work.

People would just be mad that they can't use a Touch ID without picking up the phone. But your passcode is still in option when your phone is on the table, soo...

It's really not. Especially if you have a Plus phone. Your index finger would reach the back sensor easier than your thumb reaching the front one.

Only annoying thing would be cases having that hole cut out and not being able to unlock the phone while it's laying on a table.

Most of this post above is garbage.

Well it's garabage to you, but none of it is factualy untrue. Sorry, but rear sensors are lazy engineering and a compromise. I not only seriously doubt Apple will do a rear sensor, but they will mock Android phones mercilesslly during the iPhone announcement for having one followed by a Jonny Ive's narrated video extolling the virtunes of Apple's "groundbreaking" front design.

just hear me out: there's still likely a home button on the back of the phone. touch id is still on the front under the screen, but you press on the back of the phone to go home. i can imagine five fingers gestures for emulating the home button for times you cant reach it as well. either that or force press the status bar to go multitasking and force press on the bottom of the screen to go home
