That has been my thought all along. Got 12.9” iPad Pro gen 2 replaced twice. Am on my second 2018 Pro. And this last time, Apple offered a replacement model almost immediately. Not sure if that’s based on my prior exchange or if they know something’s up. I am running the 12.3 beta and seems fine now. The iOS 12.2 beta exhibited the same digitizer behavior. They might have fixed the issue through software. That seems plausible. I have had decent performance lately.

I've spent hours with my iPad and hours on the forums, seen many times in other threads that 11.X or 12.X "would magically solve it"...they never did. When you install updates or switch ProMotion on/off or do a hard reset or an update, or touch Accessibility settings or switch Bluetooth, Pencil, whatever on/off... it does look like it has been solved maybe for an hour or a day but the problem always comes back. It usually comes back when you stop carefully testing if it went away and start doing your daily tasks.

Some iPad Pro owners who have 2017 and 2018 models have increasingly been running into issues with screen stuttering, based on a slew of threads on the Apple Support communities and the MacRumors forums.

Affected users have iPad Pro models that sometimes refuse to register touch gestures, stutter when scrolling, miss keystrokes, and have other similar issues. We here at MacRumors have not been able to replicate this issue, but the sheer number of complaints suggests something may be going on with the iPad Pro's display.

MacRumors reader Flasch describes the issue he had with his iPad Pro right out of the box:
Other iPad Pro users are having the same issue with touchscreen unresponsiveness, which can also impact scrolling and general usage. From MacRumors reader Codeseven:The problem appears to be primarily impacting new 2018 iPad Pro models, though there have also been complaints from some 2016 and 2017 iPad Pro owners.

A video demonstrating the stuttering issue
MacRumors reader Roger, who let us know about the issue, says that after approximately a month, his 2018 iPad Pro had issues with scrolling and wouldn't register input. He was able to get a replacement, as were many other customers who have experienced this issue, but he said that the replacement model has also been exhibiting the same issues.

It's not clear if this is a software or a hardware issue, and there are certainly many 2017 and 2018 iPad Pro models out there that have no problems like this at all, which makes it difficult to determine what's going on. Some of the issues with the 2017 model appear to have started with the release of iOS 11.3, but have persisted through software updates. Many users who are running iOS 12.2 are still reporting problems.

Some users have noticed that the stuttering problem goes away on the 2018 models when the Apple Pencil 2 is attached to the iPad, perhaps suggestive of an Apple Pencil-related connectivity issue.

On the whole, though, it's not clear what's causing issues for iPad Pro owners who are having touchscreen responsiveness problems. Anyone with an unresponsive touchscreen should bring it into an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Repair Shop for service as some users have been able to get replacement units.

Mine came out of the box with a slight bend. Oddly enough slight pressure against the curve straightened it again. A couple of weeks in I had the screen issues noted by many others. A hard restart and they were gone. No issues after. WITH a screen protector. Hard restarts regularly are not a good idea. But for bugs and after iOS updates it seems to cure the majority of problems I hear about people having. Same with iPhones. Volume up, volume down, then hold the power button until the iPad pro shuts off, the apple logo comes on then goes back off. Wait a minute then restart normally. If that helps anyone great! If not you needed repairs or replacement anyway so its worth a try.

So he presses the 6 button and it makes a sound and the button lights up but the 6 is not inserted, sounds to me like software.

I've seen about 100x more bent iPhones than iPads. And I rather have an iPad that is very slightly bend due to manufacturing issues but doesn't get worse during usage than an iPhone I have to worry about bending every time I sit down.
Or just don’t put iPhone in the back pocket. Problem solved.

Haha and right on queue, I just typed my post above and my 9.7” iPad Pro keyboard refused to disappear when I was pressing the close keyboard button...

So yeah my older model does have this issue it seems.

Typical Apple, makes an iOS version that consistently breaks, makes one that fixes all the bugs, then spend a few years breaking it all again, and repeat...
Otherwise those programmers would be out of job because software is good enough. They have to constantly create problems and solve it, making people feel they are very productive. Meanwhile, some real hard problems such as this one is ignored.

On another note.. Just HOW FREAKING BAD must Airpower have been??!?
Yeah. Light on fire? Smoke?
Gosh. Glad they cancel it. Phew.

That presumes all the replacements are defective. They aren't. That variability obviates insanity.
The variability makes the product unreliable under critical conditions, like musical performance. I can't throw a concert to a crapshoot. Apple needs to convince folks like me, who have come to rely on Apple products, that they still are truly reliable. Sorry, just the state of things. Jobs made me confident. Cook doesn't. Jony doesn't. Schiller doesn't.

Me too, unfortunately. Second AND third generation 12.9 iPad Pro. The second generation unit was replaced and the new one developed the same problem after a few months.
So far, three out of three of my last iPad Pro had this problem. Before that, i owned every single iPad generation without having any issue with the touch screen.

Unless you have evidence or the exact number impacted or at least SOME data, these threads just perpetuate the nonsense people echo on this forum.

"Quality has declined."
"Yet more issues."
"Apple shipping flawd products."
"Hardware issue."
"Where is quality control?"

A couple of threads doesn't speak for the 45M iPads Apple shipped last year alone.

I do Not trust the average American consumer to notice things like this or know where to complain.
Or make sensible financial decisions, eat healthy, have good taste in just about anything, etc...
Just fact. The average consumer is not held in high regard..

Are these things still bent? It's hard to keep up...

They flex enough that just picking up the 12.9" will cause the screen to distort where your fingers press on the back..

Individual people may not be savvy, but 45M together will speak volumes. If there were an actual design flaw or major issue, it would be too big to sweep under the rug. Fact.

I am having that too with my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 (not with the 11" though). Apple has replaced the 12.9 with a new retail box one. Two weeks later it got the same issue. I don't think anyone at Tim Cook's company cares about quality anymore. Just high prices and margins.

You do realize that 30 years in technology is an epoch of time? Thirty years ago Digital Equipment Corporation, Control Data Corporation, and Kodak were blue chip corporations. Thirty years ago Apple was going into a downturn spiral, only to be saved by Steve Jobs in 1996. If Apple continues to have QC issues with their hardware, and if PC and Android manufacturers continue to improve as alternatives, Apple could be in serious trouble within 5 years. The technology industry moves along at quite a clip. Apple is not invincible, and really seems to be having hardware quality issues. They could either fix those problems, focus on other areas than hardware, or dissolve.

I agree that I exaggerated on the time period a bit. I disagree with everything else you mention though - as macrumors visitors we see and are associated with a all the negative press, but most people are not effected by hardware issues at all. I personally have never had a single hardware issue with any apple product I've purchased, for example. Either way though, whether apple makes 98% perfect hardware, or 92% perfect hardware, that's not what holds apple in place. It's the ecosystem. I used to think it was heavily the OS, but even when that got sloppy people still kept buying phones. Anyway ecosystem will only continue to grow in importance, especially after things like the apple glasses launch and voice becomes more critical in the next 5 years or so.

Count me too! It looks like a hardware problem, here are more threads on this:

I personally experience this issue for almost a year on iPad Pro 2017. Had my iPad replaced when under warranty and the replacement developed the same problem after 3 months. Now I'm out of warranty, living (and working) with a defective iPad :( The screen randomly stops responding to touches at random times. Usually the issue appears to be more severe after using Smart Cover or charging the iPad (using Apple genuine charger). Also rotating iPad causes it. I'm using Apple Pencil and have the same problem with Apple Pencil.

The issue does look like it's connected with static electricity and/or gyroscope.

I get this issue as well but not always. It seems to come and go on my iPad Pro. I have a 10.5" iPad Pro. It does not happen all the time but does happen often. I thought that perhaps it was a software bug in one of the updates.

I've noticed the same behavior on my former 12.9" 2018 1TB iPad Pro. I say former because I replaced it yesterday for a cosmetic issue the screen had from poor fabrication.

Back to the current topic. Yes. I was having issues with touches registering on many occasions. I was chalking it up to beta software but the issue persisted even on 12.2 final. So far I've only had this replacement iPad one day so I will have to see if the issue returns or not.

I can say with certainty that the fabrication quality of this iPad is far superior to the one it replaced. There is also far less of a concave shape to the iPad like many have noticed on the new Pro model.

I had this on my iPad Pro 2017. I feel like it went away. But I rarely use the software keyboard.

Yeah, that's why I said, "slight flaw". Obviously I meant the exploding batteries

Man, words is read hard innit.

Considering the “slight flaws” in other products that manifest in comparable numbers do so at one, or even two orders of magnitude fewer units sold, if you were operating in good faith, you wouldn’t really complain so heavily about one particular brand, would you? But sure, make a snide deflection; it makes your position look o so sturdy

I use my 12.9 pro daily and fortunately have not had this issue. I did have touch issues on my 10” pro but those seemed to resolve after wiping and putting the latest os on. At the time I put it down to running betas then going to release versions without restoring, so I have never put a beta on the 12.9”

Or just don’t put iPhone in the back pocket. Problem solved.
Not quite, I have never put my phone into my back pocket ever. But it still got bent slightly. iPhones have become large enough that even when in the front pocket they can be put under stress when sitting down.

Bought my 12.9 the first day (USA) it was available, this issue.

The first few months were fine, then the last 2 most recent months it progressively got worse.

-couldn’t swipe, scroll, select text, etc.
-Typing on the keyboard was the only thing that worked ok, when in an core iOS keyboard scenario.

Chatted with support 3x, they Massively passed the buck. Finally, about 3 weeks ago, I scheduled an appointment. As soon as I noted to them that I DFU the iPad, they ordered a replacement for me. (5 days)
In the end, it acted like I had a virus from the 2000’s on a Windows machine, things just glitched every minute. Nasty, when the touch goes out on a touchscreen.

...the local store knew it to, the genius was trying to play it off REAL
Hard as well-just pissed me off watching them try to wiggle out of it. It was very odd, I have been a iPhone/iPad user since 2010, and I’ve never seen them act so odd about a defective device before.

you wouldn’t really complain so heavily about one particular brand, would you?

That was my entire point!

FFS! Every time a small number of, "enter rival company name here", products are reported to have a slight flaw, members on this site go into overdrive whilst at the same time defend Apple to the hilt making out it must be a user error, fake, cash grab, not a real issue etc..

Hence:
A couple of threads doesn't speak for the XX XX XX shipped last year alone

I've not been there since 2004 but words still mean the same thing down under right?
